My role as intern involved anything that fell under the umbrella of helping the brokers including writing tickets or doing the board. Whilst I was on the wet freight desk I also had the opportunity to write the daily tanker report which was then sent out to institutions all over the city.

We had 3 days professional training from individuals who have had several years experience in the city. There was also a strong emphasis on integrating us with the graduates from last year which allowed us to chat on more informal level.

We had a number of team building events, casino night, archery evening, but the most interesting was 'blag it' where we had to, on behalf of Fairbridge youth centre, go into London with a list of items and try to blag as many of them as possible..

The early mornings were the most challenging aspect of the internship for me. I'd be lying if I was to say anything else! The first couple of weeks were tough but you get used to it and learn to deal with it.

I was surprised by how little I actually knew with regards to the more technical sides of the financial services industry. I was also surprised how sociable the brokers are and how interested they were in the interns, they took time aside to get to know us properly rather than just on a business level.

My best advice for people considering an internship in interdealer broking? Confidence, confidence, confidence. Don't be afraid to ask questions, everyone has to start somewhere. Don't be afraid to make conversation with a complete stranger in the office, you never know what doors they may open for you. Be switched on and engaged from the moment you walk in the office to the moment you leave.

I run a promotional company at university. I have to be approachable and convince the most awkward and difficult of people into giving me their business, perfect training for the situations you're likely to experience as a broker.

Being offered a graduate place, and knowing you're capable of working within a firm that is a global leader is a great feeling. I've also made a couple of good friends with whom I keep in contact.

You have to be strong and confident. A sharp brain with mathematical ability is also a necessity. If you can then mix these and be a likeable person, then you're sure to be a good broker.
