Having taken part in other internships in banking and financial services, I felt that ICAP could offer the right balance for me: a strong work ethic, an exciting work environment and a social atmosphere. I was interested in ICAP Shipping in particular because it fuses the complexity of financial instruments to a global industry that really does keep the world moving. The programme offers a great insight in what it would be like to work as an interdealer broker, and I am confident that the week offers a true reflection of a career at ICAP.
Much of the week was spent learning about the financial markets and where ICAP fits into the bigger picture. We heard from a range of people that work at ICAP, as well as experienced professionals from outside the firm. This was combined with a great social timetable for the week, where I got to spend time getting to know fellow interns from both the Industry Insight programme and the summer internship. The week was rounded off with time spent on the trading floor, which at certain times offered incredible atmosphere and rushes of adrenalin.
You were made to feel a part of ICAP from day one. This intimacy really does allow you to get to know the industry in-depth, which I thought wasn't possible in a week given my past experiences. The knowledge and honesty of all those who passed on advice and teaching has left me with an increased understanding of the financial markets, as well as confidence in ICAP as an employer.
My expectations prior to the Industry Insight programme were largely based around a week I had spent at an Investment Bank. What surprised me most about interdealer broking was the increased importance of people skills; whether that is knowing what your client wants or taking them out after work to build on your relationship. Also at times I couldn't believe the intensity and atmosphere on the trading floor. It was completely involving and really sought out a competitive nature.
I play a lot of rugby, which in many ways you could liken to what the financial markets seek out from employees. It has made me hugely competitive, no matter how small the game, where only winning will do. It requires leadership yet teamwork, clear communication and thinking under pressure and perhaps most importantly requires you to integrate with your team mates on and off the pitch. I am confident all of these traits will help me succeed in a career in the financial markets.
As the Industry Insight programme is fused with the Summer Internship, it was great to spend time with the summer interns as well as those on the Insight programme. In addition to being a great educational experience it was also a great social experience, and I'm sure I will keep in touch with a number of interns that I met during the week.
