Tom Sheridan - Voice broker:

I studied Geography at University but that was not a great concern as the structured classroom training and desk rotations ensured I was given all the tools necessary to succeed in this business. I was placed on our oil desk in London and after twelve months I was given the opportunity to move to one of the most vibrant cities in the world to build out ICAP’s oil business into US products. I now run my own desk in New York, working as part of a growing team expanding the business into new areas of the oil market.

Daryl Maxwell - Group Finance:

A career in accounting provides a myriad of opportunities in terms of the various finance roles that are available which include project accounting, IT Finance, Treasury Management, Tax and the traditional financial and business reporting roles. I chose ICAP because of its reputation for being on the cutting edge of new developments and for the lively atmosphere that is ever present in the broking environment.

Working in an in-house accounting position has the advantage that you gain immediate practical experience and familiarity with the internal operations of a particular business as your training will be focused on equipping you with industry specific knowledge and skills.

After completing my degree in Vancouver, I decided to pursue a career in the financial markets so I joined ICAP’s training programme. I remember the first time I sat on a desk and was amazed by how the voice brokers are able to hear ten different voices over the phone, but after a while you do get used to it; you recognise your clients’ voices and pick it up from there. Broking is all about the relationships you build with your clients, the stronger the relationship the more they trust you and they give you the business over your competitors. It’s certainly not a 9-5 job, it’s very exciting and every day is different

My Story
Matthew Wright - Ship Broking:

I work on ICAP’s Shipping Atlantic Dry Cargo Desk which means I broker shipping contracts between ships and cargo owners within the Atlantic basin. Daily routine is generally arrive at 7am, survey a constant stream of emails delivering shipping information, call various clients and then negotiate contracts based on the information that I receive.
